DJ Screw (Robert Earl Davis Jr.) was a legendary Houston-based DJ and producer who created the "chopped and screwed" hip-hop technique. By slowing down records and cutting them up, he developed a pioneering, low-tempo sound that defined Southern rap and heavily influenced global music culture before his death in 2000 at age 29.
